  16. <p>     OUT, OUT, DAMNED SPOT. Those stains that just wouldn't wash
  17. away on the steps and pillars of the Capitol in Washington
  18. proved to be human blood. It was thrown during a demonstration
  19. for the homeless by two members of the Community for Creative
  20. Non-Violence. They "shed their blood for the dispossessed,"
  21. said Mitch Snyder, the Community's director. Scrubbing didn't
  22. work; normal bleach didn't work. The Architect of the Capitol
  23. came up with Toultice, made especially for marble, and after
  24. three applications, the blood is gone. "The problem now," says
  25. spokesman Bill Raines, "is that the bloodstained area is a shade
  26. lighter than the rest of the Capitol."
